Purpose of Item:
The nature of this item is to piggyback the Miami -Dade County contract establishing a city-wide
contract for shoes and boots (safety) from various vendors, for a bid contractual period consisting of a
base term of one (1) year with options to renewal for four (4) additional one-year periods, on an as
needed basis, by City departments and subject to any further extensions or renewals provided by
Miami -Dade County.
Background Information:
Shoes and boots (safety) from various established vendors are needed in order for City employees to
wear the proper shoes or boots to suit their type of work. These shoes and boots are required to
prevent injuries to the feet of designated City of Miami employees who are involved in labor
intensive, physical work. Not only does this contract allow for the City to incur direct cost savings,
but the City will incur indirect cost savings by minimizing: (1) sick days taken by injured workers and
cutting down on the overtime pay for City employees to cover those areas of responsiblities originally
assigned to injured workers; and, (2) workers' compensation claims.
On January 12, 2005, the Purchasing Department sent letters to all participating vendors asking their
approval to piggyback the Miami -Dade Contract. All participating vendors responded in the
affirmative authorizing the City of Miami to participate in this county bid. Miami -Dade County has
approved the initial contract issued as ITB-No. 1802-4/09.
