PROJECT SUMMARY NARRATIVE (Please summarize the project in 2
paragraphs or less.)
This project will enhance five City of Miami owned spoil islands offshore the Dinner Key area.
The proposed enhancement activities will consist of the following: stabilization (with red
mangroves) of 840 linear feet of eroding shoreline on three of the islands, the installation of a
boat docking facility (handicap accessible) on one of the islands, the selective clearing of exotic
vegetation on four of the islands, the planting of native upland maritime hammock/coastal strand
and dune vegetation on three of the islands, the creation of interpretive nature trails and a
handicap access corridor on two of the islands, and the creation of camping and picnic areas on
two of the islands.
The objectives of this project are to improve the water quality in this portion of the bay, to
provide additional recreational opportunities for the general public (including handicapped
members of the community) on the bay, to enhance the public awareness of bay resources, to
enhance the marine and upland habitats at five Dinner Key spoil islands, and to provide
experiential educational opportunities for the general public. These island improvements will
also restore ecologically important habitats to the bay that were lost due to development on the
nearby mainland shorelines. This project complements other Biscayne Bay restoration and
enhancement efforts conducted by FIND and the Miami -Dade County Department of
Environmental Resources Management (DERM), over the last 20-years. To date, DERM/FIND
have successfully enhanced 17 spoil islands in Biscayne Bay. As a result, DERM has developed
cost-effective, environmentally sound, island enhancement techniques, and has assisted the City
of Miami and Shake A Leg Miami (non-profit organization serving people with disabilities and
disadvantaged youth), in developing the design for this project. In addition, DERM will be
assisting the City of Miami and Shake A Leg with the development of the construction
documents and the implementation of this beneficial enhancement project.
