The Commission on the Status of Women was created to serve in an advisory capacity to the City
Commission, including advising on any possible barrier which may impede the participation of women in
City sponsored programs and activities; to work toward legislation granting women equality before the law;
to inspire in women the desire for self-improvement and pride of being, regardless of age, marital status, race,
color or creed; to seek for every woman the opportunities equal to her potential and responsibility; to seek
opportunities for and to encourage the active involvement of women in matters pertaining to community
progress; to encourage capable women in roles of leadership.
Six members' terms expired on November 16, 2004:
• Commissioner Winton has one nomination for seat currently held by Marie Bell.
• Chairman Sanchez has two nominations for seats currently held by:
1. Mary Racilia Smith
2. Vacant seat created because Victoria Varela resigned
• Commissioner Regalado has one nomination for seat currently held by Josefina
Sanchez-Pando, who has served for more than eight consecutive terms. Section 2-885(b)
of the Code states that no board member shall serve more than eight consecutive years on
any one board. This provision may be waived by a unanimous vote of the City
Commission.
• Commissioner Allen has two nominations for seats currently held by:
1. vacant seat created because Shashi Jagadish resigned.
2. Karen Cartright, who had been nominated by former Commissioner Teele.
For your convenience, we are including a copy of the current membership of said board. By copy
of this memorandum, we are requesting the Agenda Office place this issue on the March 10, 2005
Commission agenda. This issue was deferred from the November 18, 2004, December 9, 2004 and
the January 13, 2005 Commission meetings.
