Background Information:
The annual cultural event is held in February to coincide with Black History Month and attract
visitors to the once thriving neighborhood. Red velvet cake is an old southern specialty popular in the
African American community. The 2005 festival will include live music and dance, student art
exhibit, children's activities, vendors, food tasting with a red velvet cake competition, and a liturgical
performance in sign language. The Black Archives Research and History Foundation of South
Florida, Inc. will conduct a guided walking tour of the national landmark D.A. Dorsey House, home
of Miami's first Black millionaire. Eight selected New World School of the Arts (NWSA) high
school students will display their visual artwork and receive required community service hours to
assist as docents for the tour.
The City of Miami Overtown Neighborhood Enhancement Team is partnering with the Greater Miami
Chamber of Commerce Leadership Miami, GT Mortgage, Inc., Royal Caribbean International, and the
Overtown Civic Partnership that includes the Black Archives and Greater Bethel A.M.E. Church.
Community organizations and nonprofits, such as Jackson Memorial Hospital, Action, Northern Trust
Bank, Suited for Success, and Miami -Dade College signed up for booths in 2004.
The Miami -Dade County funds will help defray the cost of marketing/publicity, printing, equipment
rental, and supplies.
