Funding is available from the Urban Areas Security Initiative ("UASI") Grant Program II, Project No. 110111, Account Code No. 280910.6.840. Background Information: The Evolution 5000 Thermal Imaging Cameras will better assist firefighters in vision impaired environments by offering them infrared sight. This handheld, lightweight device will allow the First Responders to "see" in clouded, smoky, and dark areas, where, otherwise, they would be handicapped. Each Thermal Imaging Camera contains a sensor that reacts to infrared energy from the targeted items and converts that object into a visible "heated" image. These real-time images are then displayed in variances of black or white - white being hot and black representing cold. A Thermal Imaging Camera will be mounted on all of the active Fire -Rescue and Fire trucks for easy access ability. A mount will also be installed on substitute trucks when the primary vehicle is out -of - service. The camera will simply be switched from one truck to another, from one bracket to the other. All cameras have been put through specialized testing from the highest levels and temperatures for water/dust ingress, direct flame/heat exposure, vibration, to radio frequency interference all to ensure its rigorousness in a firefighter's harsh environment. Some of the specialty features each camera includes are: advanced safety features that prevent accidental shutoff; over -temperature warning; a large, high definition screen is a 3.5" LCD display created for multiple viewers and efficacy in searches; an ergonomic hand-held for easy hand-offs to other firefighters; and a true temperature bar graph and digitial readout temperature display. Installing the Evolution 5000 Thermal Imaging Cameras will allow firefighters to not only navigate safely into and out of a dark or cloudy situation but it will also aid them in searching the area for any victims that may have been overlooked due to the negative visibility.
