WHEREAS, the City of Miami ("City"), cognizant of the glory of the human spirit, today grieves the untimely death of prominent South Florida attorney, Henry Latimer, the distinguished and greatly admired former Broward County Circuit Judge, and a man hailed by The Miami Herald as "a legal giant with a heart to match" whose predominant passion was a strong sympathy with the oppressed and a zeal for their elevation; and WHEREAS, Judge Latimer, a man of humble beginnings who was at the forefront of efforts to improve the representation of African Americans in the legal profession, was nurtured by the dedication of teachers in the segregated schools of Jacksonville, Florida, and by the discipline and guidance of the City's African American leadership, of its doctors, dentists, lawyers, ministers and rights activists whose vision of community modeled, for young "Lat" and his generation, the elements of responsible citizenship, love for God, respect for mankind and loyalty to country; and WHEREAS, Judge Latimer, with a Bachelor's Degree from Florida A. and M. University and a Master's Degree from Florida Atlantic University, acquired his Juris Doctorate from the University of Miami Law School and, as "an unstinting giver of his time and his heart," was recipient of the Florida Bar President's Pro Bono Service Award, embracing the serious challenges of public service as a sacred trust: serving as a non-commissioned officer in the United States Marine Corps and creating a legal milieu to address our basic rights as human beings; and WHEREAS, Judge Latimer, a respected leader whose life was spent in affirmation of the human spirit, a man who "valued compassion and love over personal gain," died Monday, January 24, 2005, leaving a compellingly powerful legacy in family, friends and good works; NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The authorities of the City of Miami, in the State of Florida, on behalf of our citizens, pause in our official deliberations to express solemn remorse and deepest sympathy to his wife, Mildred, his daughters, Tracie Latimer and Desiree Williams, other bereaved family, colleagues and friends and to record for posterity this tribute to the memory of South Florida's "natural teacher, role model and mentor," for, in venerating his legacy, we cradle the glory of a brilliant and selfless champion of the human spirit, Distinguished Broward County District Judge, The Honorable Henry Latimer, (1938-2005).
