BY T E D B O LTO N ■ Most Thursday nights you can stop by The Tuscany in Coconut Grove for a night of jazz, blues, and Dixieland music provided by our own Joe Donato with The Brian Murphy Trio. This had become a regular event and always produces an even blend of solid musi- cianship. The event is free, the food is above average, and the crowd is always friendly, happy, and oh so ready to dance. On some occasions, the above average turns to extraordinary when the accom- plished jazz great Ira Sullivan sits in with the band. Sullivan cut his saxophone chops with none other than Art Blakey in the 50s, and also spent some time working with trumpeter Red Rodney throughout his career. It is always so odd how just one great musician can make a band soar to levels it usually never achieves alone. Such is the case when Ira Sullivan sits in on 'Thursday nights. If you have missed these special moments, now you can catch Mr. Sullivan on his lat- est release entitled "East Coast Standards Time" which is a nod to a few of the classic standards covered by this fine group of tal- ented musicians. The CD combines the familiar with the new by adding two com- positions by Rich Walker into the mix. The CD opens with an ethereal Pat Methany-sounding guitar featuring the superb guitar work of Rich Walker, and then gently eases into a Mark McKee solo on piano in the composition called "Sugar Plum" — solid piano and rhythm through- out. Sullivan comes forth in the swinging solo on the next cut "Alfredo." This is a tenured musician who looks for texture and depth... not just riffs and scales. "Nature Boy," one of Nat Coles' most successful singles, is beautifully interpreted. The group makes it interesting with a South Florida Latin groove featuring Sullivan on flute. Ask for it the next time you see him at The Tuscany. Other standards include "I've Got a Crush on You," "All the Things You Are," and "Some Time Ago." This is comfort music that moves with ease, and creates some wonderful improvisational moments that will stand the test of time. Highly rec- ommended — both live ...and on CD.
