EMS Matching Grant M4067 Award (FY 2004)." to support the pre -hospital activities

3. History of item:
The leading cause of death in the United States is sudden cardiac arrest, killing over
400,000 people each year. Pursuant to Ordinance No. 12402, adopted September 11,
2003, the City of Miami initiated a Public Access Defibrillation ("PAD") Program in an
effort to increase survivability from sudden cardiac arrest.
This year, the City of Miami has been awarded a grant, in the amount of $152,250, from
the State of Florida Department of Health, Bureau of Emergency Medical Services
("EMS'), pursuant to &401.113 (2) (b), Florida Statutes, to provide grants to EMS
organizations for the improvement, expansion and continuation of pre -hospital
activities and other emergency medical services items as specified in the Grant
Applications. This award is the second AED grant the Department of Fire -Rescue has
received since the State of Florida Department of Health, Bureau of EMS began
awarding said grants. Specifically, the City of Miami will use these funds along with
the matching funds allocated by the City of Miami for $50,750 as stipulated by the

Yes. The AEDs will be in police vehicles Citywide across all Districts.
