I am writing this letter in support of the application being made by the City or Miami
Fire -Rescue Department to the Florida Department of Health, Bureau of Emergency Medical
Services' State Emergency Medical Services Matching Grant. The Department is requesting
funds to purchase greatly needed EMS equipment for their emergency personnel to use as they
serve the citizens of Miami in providing rapid response that saves lives.
Miami Fire -Rescue received 63,041 EMS calls in 2002, a number which can only rise as
the population figures in Miami continue to swell. With 17% of its citizens aged 65 and older,
the demand is great for sophisticated and cost effective medical rescue equipment such as
Automated External Defibrillators and Continuous Positive Airway Pressure devices. In
addition, Computer Aided Dispatch software programs are required now to instantly mobilize
resources for disaster management.
As Chair of the State Subccrrtmittee on Health Services, I endorse this effort as an
important service that addresses the needs of the Miami community and look forward to a
positive raiponse when the application is reviewed.
