Na me: School Resource Officer Problem Identification Two of the City of Miami's biggest concerns in their neighborhood schools, include child safety and thi problem of truancy. Due to lack of personnel, Truancy sweeps are currently being conducted on limited basis. Truancy is one of the City of Miami's greatest concerns involving youth who attend pubii middle schools and high schools. Some contributors to this problem include lack of academi achievement, perceived limited job opportunities for the future, low self-esteem, etc. Additionally, th department's other concern, is the safety of young elementary school children. Numerous children between the ages of five and twelve, are abused in this country every year. The Miami Polio Department would like to implement the Resisting Aggression Defensively Program (RADKids) i approximately 10 of the city's elementary schools. The program is intended to promote safety an awareness for youth in everyday surroundings. Program Description The city of Miami School Resource Unit will enhance the services currently provided to its resident Officers will increase the number of truancy sweeps during the grant year. Prevention educatic classes will be provided by the school resource officers to all targeted schools. In addition prevention classes, all truants will be required to participate in monthly diversion activities. The: activities will provide enhanced lessons on trust, self esteem, problem solving and team building. Ea( activity will provide team building skills, communication and problem solving techniques. SRO's v also conduct monthly prevention sessions with truants and their parents. To increase the safety al awareness of younger kids, the department will implement a new program in its elementary schoo Two officers will be trained to teach the RADKids curriculum in 10 of the city's schools. The RADH curriculum is structured to address self defense and self awareness in today's youth. in additior provides youth with healthy techniques on how to deal with aggression. Curriculum materials inclu training gear, i.e. helmets, elbow and knee pads and floor mats. Each kit includes gear for four yot and one instructor package. Added training for officers will equip the unit with two newly certifi officers. Remaining grant funds will be used to support program activities and events. A computer be purchased to track and monitor truants in each of the city's neighborhoods. Officers will track program participants, including quarterly grade reports and truancy rates. Year One Activities/Accomplishments & Unmet Needs (2003-2004) Miami's School Resource Officer Unit began its program late in the grant year, due to contract issu Although starting late, the department has proven very successful in providing services for studef 6 in-ser\; Current data indicates SRO's provided 5 trespass warnings; 80 student arrests; orientations; counseling sessions for more than 105 students and 28 parents; 12 prevention educai classes; and 10 special events. Newly assigned officers provided truancy sweeps and mentor activities in local schools including sessions from the RADKid curriculum.
