A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION DECLARING NO OBJECTION
AND SUPPORTING THE CO -DESIGNATION BY MIAMI-DADE COUNTY ("COUNTY"),
PURSUANT TO RESOLUTION NO. R-729-23, THAT PORTION WITHIN THE CITY OF
MIAMI'S LIMITS OF TAMIAMI CANAL ROAD AT ITS INTERSECTION WITH
NORTHWEST 63RD AVENUE AS "SOR HILDA ALONSO"; FURTHER DIRECTING
THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN
DESIGNATED OFFICES.
WHEREAS, Sister Hilda Alonso ("Sr. Alonso"), born on February 10, 1921, in San Juan
y Martinez, Pinar del Rio, Cuba, was a pillar of faith, a beacon of hope, and an unwavering
servant of God, dedicating her life to the education and care of the underserved; and
WHEREAS, Sr. Alonso was instrumental in the establishment and expansion of the
Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul in Miami, a congregation dedicated to serving the
poor, which she founded after fleeing Cuba due to religious persecution by the communist
regime; and
WHEREAS, under her leadership and vision, the Daughters of Charity provided
comprehensive support to the Cuban exile community in Miami, including spiritual guidance,
educational programs, medical and dental assistance, and other vital services through the
Centro Hispano Catolico at Gesu Church, the oldest Catholic parish in Miami; and
WHEREAS, Sr. Alonso's commitment to education and her belief in the transformative
power of faith were evident in her tenure as the principal of Colegio La Inmaculada in Havana,
Cuba, where she advocated for the education of girls, including those whose families could not
afford tuition; and
WHEREAS, after being forced into exile, Sr. Alonso continued her mission in Puerto
Rico and Miami, where she significantly contributed to the religious and educational landscape,
including her pivotal role in the establishment of the mission of the Daughters of Charity in Haiti;
and
WHEREAS, her efforts in Miami extended to the coordination and shipping of essential
supplies to Cuba and Haiti, demonstrating her unwavering commitment to serve those in need
across the Caribbean; and
WHEREAS, Sr. Alonso passed away on July 5, 2022, in Miami at the age of 101, leaving
behind a legacy that continues to inspire and impact the community through her selfless service
and dedication to the principles of charity and education; and
WHEREAS, on its September 6, 2023, agenda, the Miami -Dade County ("County")
Board of Commissioners adopted Resolution No. R-729-23, co -designating Tamiami Canal
Road at its intersection with Northwest 63rd Avenue as "Sor Hilda Alonso," and urged the City of
Miami ("City") to join in said co -designation; and
WHEREAS, Sr. Alonso's legacy is a testament to her dedication to service, her deep
faith, and her impact on countless lives through her work with the Daughters of Charity in Cuba,
Puerto Rico, Miami, and Haiti, making her a deserving figure for this co -designation; and
WHEREAS, the City Commission has no objection and desires to honor Sr. Alonso by
supporting the street co -designation of that portion within the City's limits of Tamiami Canal
Road at its intersection with Northwest 63rd Avenue as "Sor Hilda Alonso";
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are
adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this section.
Section 2. The City Commission declares no objection and supports the co -designation
by the County's Board of County Commissioners, pursuant to Resolution No. R-729-23,
designating that portion within the City's limits of Tamiami Canal Road at its intersection with
Northwest 63rd Avenue as "Sor Hilda Alonso".
Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to the
Departments of Police, Fire -Rescue, and Solid Waste; the Miami -Dade County Department of
Transportation and Public Works; and the United States Postal Service.
Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption.

NOTE #1: Pursuant to the resolution, this item became effective immediately upon adoption by the
Commission. NOTE #2: Per Directive, City Clerk's Office transmitted on 4/23/2024.
