Timoney ' hief of Police DATE : SUBJECT: OCT 1 8 2004 REFERENCES: ENCLOSURES: FILE : Pocket Item — October 28, 2004 City Commission Meeting Gang Resistance Education and Training (G.R.E.A.T.) Grant I am respectfully requesting your authorization to present the attached resolution as a pocket item in the October 28, 2004, City Commission meeting. This item is to accept a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Justice Program, in the amount of $85,000, for the Gang Resistance Education and Training (G.R.E.A.T.) Program. This grant provides funds for officers assigned to our Gang Unit to teach the G.R.E.A.T. curriculum to at -risk youths in the 6th through 8th grade levels. Over 975 students will be targeted during this school year. The Gang Resistance Education and Training (G.R.E.A.T) Grant calendar year is from January 1, 2004 to Jan»ary 31, 2005. However, after September 11, 2001, and the War in Iraq, the Federal Government, who administers this grant, underwent a reorganization, and release of funds was delayed until September 2004. As a result, the City of Miami Police Department has lost ten (10) months of teaching youths about the dangers of being a gang member or joining a gang. It is imperative that this Grant be presented as a pocket item,,during the October 28th, 2004, City Commission meeting, so that we can immediately begin cgbrdinating the dartment's effort to teach the G.R.E.A.T. curriculum during this sc}gioc‘•1 year, which began in Augusof 2004.
