(G.R.E.A.T.) Program
RECOMMENDATION
It is respectfully recommended that the City Commission adopt the attached Resolution,
establishing a new special revenue fund entitled: "Gang Resistance Education and Training
(G.R.E.A.T.)" Program, accepting a grant from the U. S. Department of Justice, Office of Justice
Programs, in the amount of $85,000; authorizing the City Manager to execute the necessary
documents in a form acceptable to the City Attorney, to implement acceptance of said grant.
There are no matching funds required of the City of Miami.
BACKGROUND
The Miami Police Department is continuing its efforts to educate the youth of our community in
the dangers of gang involvement. The Gang Resistance Education and Training (G.R.E.A.T.)
program provides this opportunity by targeting middle and junior high school students within the
City of Miami. The program's curriculum helps Police Officers teach the students how to deal
with peer pressure, gang resistance, conflict resolution and makes them aware of their
responsibilities. Officers will teach the GREAT curriculum to over 975 students.
FISCAL IMPACT: None
