CONDITION:

Surface:
The structure of the object is stable and secure at this time. All seams
appear stable. The stone cladding has numerous minor, moderate and
major separations noted particularly near the top perimeter edge. There are
no other apparent areas of separation, loss, deformation or previous repair
at this time.
A thin layer of airborne dirt and dust covers the surface of the object. The
original dark brown patina appears red/brown. A moderate coherent and
adherent copper sulfate and copper oxide corrosion product appears
mottled and streaked over the rd/brown surface. The streaks and mottling is
most notable on the upper torso. These corrosion products are consistent
with bronze exposed to an outdoor environment. There are numerous areas
of minor and moderate abrasion noted near areas overall. There are no
unusual stains, accretions, insecurities or biological material noted at this
time.
TREATMENT RECOMMENDATIONS:
The Bayfront Park requested an on -site examination of the object prior to treatment. At the
owner's request, replacement of the stone tile -clad base is not part of this proposal. Given
that the sculpture has been exposed to the out -doors, exhibits overall mottled areas of
corrosion following treatment is recommended:
Pre-treatment examination and identitication-
A technical examination, conducted by the conservator, will be performed
to reflect aspects of manufacture and material identification to verify and
augment what is currently known about the object. This examination will

also include identification of past -collection deterioration, treatment or
alteration. This intormation will be used to design the final treatment
proposal. The proposal below is an approximation of the materials and
techniques needed for treatment. Curatorial collaboration is needed to
define the full scope of the treatment proposal. No unnecessary measures
will be taken and every effort will be made to maintain the research
potential of the object. Treatment will be performed only after final
examination of the object and receipt of written approval from the owner.
Any alteration to the final treatment proposal and release will be discussed
with the owner for approval. •
Shelley Reisman Paine is a Fellow in the American Institute of
Conservation and abides by their highest ethical and professional standards
of practice. These do not, however, include guarantees or warrantees for
the work completed. Further, after the treatment is completed, the
conservator will have no liability to injuries caused to the public by the
sculpture because of any act by an individual, minors included, or the
sculpture.
Clean
Rinse the surface of the object to remove surface debris with filtered water.
Corrosion reduction
Thin or remove the unsightly corrosion layers with mild hand abrasives.
Remove the investment materials and fill any holes in the bronze with
epoxy or wax depending on the size of the opening.
Degrease
Clean the surface with a mild non-ionic detergent in filtered distilled water,
rinse thoroughly with filtered distilled water, and degrease with a
combination of appropriate organic solvents.
Compensation
Compensate for irregularities in the patina with either tinted wax or local
application of chemical patina. A complete repatination will not be
performed.
Coating
Apply two coats of a properly formulated wax mix applied to the heated
metal surface. Follow this with a sacrificial coat ofa formulated cold wax.
Maintenance schedule
Yearly maintenance is required and will involve the following:
Rinse with filtered water, examine for new damage, clean with
.05% Orvus and distilled water, and apply new coat of paste wax.
