It is respectfully recommended that the Miami City Commission adopt the attached Resolution authorizing the Executive Director of the Bayfront Park Management Trust to repair and refurbish the Claude Pepper Statue in Bayfront Park, the Simon Bolivar and Ponce De Leon statues and the Torch of Friendship medallions located in the Torch of Friendship Plaza pursuant to the attached proposal submitted by Shelley Reisman Paine Conservation. The Bayfront Park Management Trust at its July 26, 2004, board meeting approved this project in an amount not to exceed $70,620, inclusive of conservation costs, security and scaffolding, through Resolution No.04-034. BACKGROUND The Bayfront Park Management Trust (Trust) was created to direct, operate, manage and maintain Bayfront and Bicentennial Parks for the purposes of ensuring maximum community utilization and enjoyment. To that end, one of the Trust's charges is to continue the ongoing maintenance of Park statues and monuments. The attached proposal, submitted by Shelley Reisman Paine Conservation (SRPC), contemplates repairing and refurbishing the Claude Pepper Statue, located on Bayfront Park property, and also the Simon Bolivar and Ponce de Leon Statues as well as the 20 medallions, all located at the Torch of Friendship Plaza, City of Miami property. All statues and medallions are in constant exposure to the elements and as a result are in various stages of disrepair, discoloration or oxidation. The Trust recognized the significance of this conservation and approved this project through Resolution No. 04-034, in an amount not to exceed $70,620. This amount reflects the conservation work, security and scaffolding. Funds are allocated in the 2003-04 BPMT Capital Budget, Public Monuments Rehabilitation, and Park Beautification. TFS/jrg
