Management Trust to repair

and monuments in Bayfront
Park and at the Torch of
Friendship Plaza.
It is respectfully recommended that the Miami City Commission adopt the attached Resolution
authorizing the Executive Director of the Bayfront Park Management Trust to repair and refurbish
the Claude Pepper Statue in Bayfront Park, the Simon Bolivar and Ponce De Leon statues and the
Torch of Friendship medallions located in the Torch of Friendship Plaza pursuant to the attached
proposal submitted by Shelley Reisman Paine Conservation. The Bayfront Park Management Trust
at its July 26, 2004, board meeting approved this project in an amount not to exceed $70,620,
inclusive of conservation costs, security and scaffolding, through Resolution No.04-034.
BACKGROUND
The Bayfront Park Management Trust (Trust) was created to direct, operate, manage and
maintain Bayfront and Bicentennial Parks for the purposes of ensuring maximum community
utilization and enjoyment. To that end, one of the Trust's charges is to continue the ongoing
maintenance of Park statues and monuments. The attached proposal, submitted by Shelley
Reisman Paine Conservation (SRPC), contemplates repairing and refurbishing the Claude Pepper
Statue, located on Bayfront Park property, and also the Simon Bolivar and Ponce de Leon
Statues as well as the 20 medallions, all located at the Torch of Friendship Plaza, City of Miami
property. All statues and medallions are in constant exposure to the elements and as a result are
in various stages of disrepair, discoloration or oxidation. The Trust recognized the significance
of this conservation and approved this project through Resolution No. 04-034, in an amount not
to exceed $70,620. This amount reflects the conservation work, security and scaffolding. Funds
are allocated in the 2003-04 BPMT Capital Budget, Public Monuments Rehabilitation, and Park
Beautification.
