Scholarship Selection Criteria
Potential Selection Criteria to Apply Ranking/Point System:
• Parents or legal guardian of potential applicant must be a full time/permanent employee
of the Department of Solid Waste for a minimum of four (4) years
• Applicant must have a high school diploma or GED
• Applicant must be enrolled as a full or part-time student at a 4-yr., 2-yr., vocational
and/or technical school that is fully accredited
• Applicant must be a legal resident of the United States
• Applicant must have valid social security number
• Applicant must be a dependent of a full time, permanent employee of the Department of
Solid Waste (as verified on recent tax return)
• Applicant's eligibility criteria will be reviewed annually (not automatically awarded)
• Maximum annual scholarship will $3,000.00, per student and will be awarded no more
than 4 years per student.
• Scholarships will not cover dorm fees
• If awarded, monies will be deposited in school's educational account and any monies not
utilized shall be returned to the City of Miami Recycling and Educational Fund. No
monies will be paid directly to the student.
Consideration for Selection Process and Logistics:
• Annual application period to coordinate w/Fa11 and/or Spring Admission
• Selection Committee composed of volunteers from Solid Waste, Employee Relations,
AFSCME Union , Dade County School Board and Miami Dade College
• Use of point system to enable various factors to be considered other than academic
performance
• Seek partnerships with Educational Institutions offering Educational Information and
Academic Counseling as needed (involve parents)
• Celebrate success with communications within Solid Waste on progress made to support
educational achievements

Scholarship Award Criteria
The following criteria and ranking method will be utilized to award college tuition scholarships to children of
the Solid Waste Department's employees who are either graduates from high school and are college bound
and/or who are already enrolled in college. Applications will be taken during the month of January through
March 15th and are limited to these young people. The number of scholarships to be awarded will depend
upon the availability of interest earned on the Educational Trust Fund with the City of Miami. Beginning
with the highest ranked applicant, scholarships will be awarded until the available funds are exhausted.
Academic: This portion of the criteria will be worth 25% of the total criteria.
GPA — 4.0 in a 4 or 5.0 in a 5 point grading system 5
GPA — 3.50 in a 4 or 4.5 in a 5 point grading system 4
GPA — 3.0 in a 4 or 4.0 in a 5 point grading system 3
GPA — Less than 3.0 in a 4 or 4.0 in a 5 point grading system 2
Composite ACT score have 25 or higher 3
Composite ACT score less than 25 but passing 2
Composite SAT score of 1,500 or above 7
Composite SAT score of 1,400 6
Composite SAT score of 1,300 5
Composite SAT score of 1,200 4
Composite SAT score of 1,100 3
Composite SAT score of 1,000 2
Composite SAT score of less than 1,000 1
Financial Need: This portion of the criteria will be worth 35% of the total criteria.
Combined annual Family Income of $20,000 or less 30
Combined annual Family Income of $30,000 or less 25
Combined annual Family Income of $40,000 or less 20
Combined annual Family Income of $50,000 or less 15
Combined annual Family Income of $60,000 or less 10
Combined annual Family Income of $70,000 or less 05
Plus 3.0 for each family member above 4 (Immediate family- e.g. parents, sister, brother)
Plus 3.0 for each family member above 2 (Single Family) (Immediate family -see above)
General Other Criteria: This portion of the criteria will be worth 40% of the total criteria,
Demonstration of involvement in extra -curricular activities (i.e, band, ROTC, Clubs, etc.) 10
Demonstration of community service and involvement (volunteering, Mentoring, Tutoring, etc.) 5
Leadership ability as expressed in essay describing commitment and ability to
overcome obstacles. 15
Three (3) Letters of recommendation from teachers, counselors or others 5
Commendations, Awards, Other Participation in related events/activities 5
