RECOMMENDATION
The City of Miami Street Codesignation Committee recommends that the City of Miami
Commission adopt the attached Resolution authorizing the street codesignation of NE
55TH Street from NE 2ND Avenue to NE San Avenue as "Sir Winston Churchill Way."
BACKGROUND
At the end of World War II an editor asked Winston Churchill, the great statesman,
politician and historian, about graceful retirement. Churchill responded, "Mr. Editor, I
leave when the pub closes." This Laureate son of a British father and an American mother
was by Act of Congress an honorary American citizen. He epitomized during some of
history's darkest hours, the spirit of democracy, perseverance, sacrifice and service.
Among countless tributes bestowed on him, on February 26, 1946 Churchill accepted an
honorary Doctor of Jurisprudence degree at the University of Miami during convocation
at the Orange Bowl stadium. He visited local attractions and vacationed in South Florida
beaches. This effort further recognizes the contributions of an indomitable spirit who
graced this City and the world with his wisdom and strength.
Fiscal Impact: $400
