HomeMy WebLinkAboutprogram descriptionThe City of Miami Fire Explorers Program matches young adults interested in the
Fire and Rescue profession with the people and program resources within the
City of Miami Fire Department. It is open to young men and women ages 14 - 16.
One of the many goals of the program is to help each Explorer develop
leadership skills, gain a wealth of knowledge, and obtain practical experience in
the Fire and Rescue career field.
Community Service is one of the most important components of the program.
We pride ourselves in providing community service on an ongoing basis. Doing
so has instilled personal & community values in our youth members. We
currently have 30 youth members enrolled in the Explorers Post.
One new initiative that we are striving to implement is the Juvenile Fire setter's
prevention program. Whether the result of a curious child playing with matches or
the malicious act of a troubled delinquent, juvenile fire setting is. a serious and
growing problem in Miami. Statistics show that young people are still captivated
with fire and as such are the number one identified arsonist group. In recognition
of the seriousness of the City's juvenile fire setter problem, the City of Miami Fire
Rescue Explorers program, in collaboration with the City of Miami Parks
Department are applying to your organization for a grant to implement a juvenile
fire setter prevention and intervention program. The goal is to prevent juvenile
fire setting through early education. The program will be held after school and will
target all 37 of the City of Miami inner City Parks with the potential of reaching
over 1500 kids. The Explorers will teach the program in non-traditional settings.
We firmly belief that kids are better motivated and receptive to learning when
taught by their own peers. With emphasis placed on visual aids, interaction and
practical application. A pre and post survey will be conducted to assess
knowledge gained as a result of the program.
We are requesting financial support to acquire supplies, transportation and visual
aids. Our goal is to utilize this program as model across the country.
Also, through this program we will acquire statistical data to use in establishing
juvenile prevention.
