Re: Recommendation for Approval of 6/24/04 City Commission
Agenda Items CA-1 and PH-1
Dear Chairman Teele:
This letter serves as the Miami River Commission's (MRC) "official
statement" to all City Commissioners, requested in City Resolution 00-320,
regarding June 24, 2004 City Commission Agenda Items CA-1 & PH-1,
which impact the Miami River.
The MRC recommends approval of agenda item CA-1, the Point Park
submerged land lease. Executing the submerged land lease with the State of
Florida is required in order to provide the planned riverfront temporary
recreational vessel dock slips, along this new City of Miami park site.
In addition, the MRC recommends approval of agenda item PH-1,
renewing the Scavenger 2000 de -pollution vessel services contract. It is my
understanding that in the one-year of Scavenger 2000 services thus far,
8,984 cubic feet of garbage was removed, 749 hazards to vessel navigation
were collected, 172,141,000 litters of oxygen were pumped into the
waterways and 725,260,000 gallons of water were treated through the de-
contamination system, resulting in significant reductions of a-coli and major
improvements to water quality. Furthermore, the Scavenger 2000 de -
pollution vessel captain is equipped with a digital camera cellular telephone,
and pictures of illegal polluters, suspicious activity, etc. are e-mailed real
time to the appropriate enforcement and regulatory agencies.
Point Park, and the de -pollution vessel services, are recommended in
the award winning Miami River Corridor Urban Infill Plan, the MRC's
adopted strategic plan of River improvement initiatives.
Yours very truly,
Robert L. Parks,
Chair,
Miami River Commission
