CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA INTER -OFFICE MEMORANDUM TO : FROM : The Honorable Mayor and Members MAY - 6 2004 DATE : FILE : Proposed Resolution SUBJECT: of the City Commission oe Arriola Chief Administrator/City Manager REFERENCES : Do The Right Thing Program ENCLOSURES: RECOMMENDATION It is respectfully recommended that the City Commission adopt the attached Resolution authorizing the funding of the "Do The Right Thing" Program, and allocating funds, in an amount not exceeding $117,485. Funding is available from the Law Enforcement Trust Fund, Project Number 690001. BACKGROUND In July 1990, the Police Department instituted a program to encourage the youth of our community to "do the right thing." Funding is being requested for the continuation of this program which rewards youth for being leaders in the community, not using drugs, portraying a positive image and excelling in education. Another benefit of this program is that it allows children, living in high -crime areas, to interact with uniformed police officers in non - confrontational settings thereby establishing positive associations and enhancing mutual respect. The program directly impacts approximately 9,000 children annually through its awards program and hundreds more through community events, activities and projects. The "Do The Right Thing" program grew, since its inception, by attracting various influential sponsors. The major sponsors are: The Miami Herald, British Airways, WTVJ-NBC 6, Carnival Cruise Lines, Publix, Verizon Wireless, Royal McDonald House Charities, Berenfeld, Spritzer, Shechter, and Sheer, CPA's, and Mr. Don Carlin, all having been instrumental in the advertising and promotion of the program. FISCAL IMPACT: None, funded by the Law Enforcement Trust Fund.
