May 7-9, 2004 Coconut Crow Convention Center Miami, FL USA A 3 day youth hip hop symposium created specifically to empower youth through education presented along with social, cultural arts and recreational activities targeted directly for youth motivated by hip hop culture and music. What is the purpose of the Youth Power Summit? To implement strategies directed at empowering youth to accomplish the Miami Dade Branch NAACP's goals coinciding with the National Back to School Stay in School Campaign, the National Call for Action in Education and to bridge the generational gap between NAACP and hip hop culture thus creating a united front in which to face issues currently effecting healthy youth development throughout urban communities. What are the specific issues the summit will draw attention to? • Increasing College Enrollment especially in Historically Black Colleges and Universities • Increasing High School Graduation rates • Decreasing absenteeism rates in schools • Decreasing behavioral and Disciplinary problem rates • Increasing student morale • Increasing prevention through awareness of sexually transmitted diseases • Decreasing detrimental effects of Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test as high stakes testing • Improving general health and wellness • Increasing youth civic/political participation • Increasing education on involvement in labor movement and its impact • Increasing and encouraging involvement in NAACP activities • Increasing economic independence through financial literacy • Increasing access to educational resources throughout urban communities Increasing economic as well as creative control of minority artists. • Building strategies towards addressing current images/stereotypes of minority displayed through media Who is the summit targeting? Youth ages 14 to 27, locally driven but also promoted nationally. Why were the dates May 7th through May 9th, 2004 chosen to launch the event? The launching of this annual event is dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education, the 1954 landmark case that overruled Plessy v.
