MAr- ! 7 TrIA Resolution authorizing the donation of Category "A" surplus items to Holmes Elementary in support of the Mayor's Mentoring Initiative FILE : RECOMMENDATION It is respectfully recommended that the City Commission authorize the donation of surplus items, per the attached list in the resolution, declared as Category "A" surplus items by the Chief Procurement Officer, to Holmes Elementary in support of the Mayor's Mentoring Initiative. BACKGROUND Mayor Manuel Diaz and the City of Miami are making the children of the City of Miami a priority. During the 2003-2004 school year, the Mayor has brought together a variety of groups' talents and resources together to formulate a plan to support Holmes Elementary School, the one F elementary school within the City's limits, to improve the students' and the school's overall performance. These groups include the Adopt -a -Classroom Organization, All Aboard Program, Big Brothers & Big Sisters Program, Children's Psychiatriatic Center, Community in Schools, Dade County Council PTA/PTSA, Florida Marlins, Hands -on -Miami, the University of Miami, and the Urban League of Greater Miami. The plan has three parts. The first part deals with supporting the academic program of the school. The second part of the plan deals with increasing parental involvement. The final part focuses on improving the physical environment of the school. In order to support the faculty and staff of Holmes Elementary School to enhance the physical environment of the school, it involves recruiting city employees as volunteers, partnering with community groups and organizations such as the Hands on Miami Organization, and seeking out possible support from businesses and community connections. The Chief Procurement Officer has located surplus items in the City and has declared it Category "A" surplus items, which in the City's Procurement Code means that the items shall be available for disposition as the City's contribution or the City's commitment in support of a particular public purpose, which may include those community civic or social service programs as may be authorized by the City Commission. Thus, the Mayor respectfully request that the Miami City Commission authorize the donation of the Category "A" surplus items to Holmes Elementary in support of the "Mayor's Mentoring Initiativ-' JA/L HI
