HomeMy WebLinkAboutMemo-1 UntitledCITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA INTER -OFFICE MEMORANDUM TO : FROM : Honorable Mayor Manny Diaz and Commissioners r a Joe Arriola City Manager/Chief Administrator DATE: SUBJECT: REFERENCES: ENCLOSURES: March 12, 2004 FILE : Resolution Authorizing City Manager to Apply to FIND for Grant to Remove Derelict Vessels RECOMMENDATION It is respectfully recommended that the City Commission adopt the attached Resolution authorizing the City Manager to submit a grant application to the Florida Inland Navigational District Waterways Assistance Program (FIND) for the removal of approximately 25 derelict vessels from Dinner Key with matching funds in the amount of $50,000 allocated from the fiscal year 2004 operating budget. BACKGROUND The Department of Conferences, Conventions & Public Facilities is desirous of applying for grant funds from FIND for the removal of derelict vessels from the City owned bay bottom in Dinner Key. Presently, there are an estimated twenty-five (25) derelict vessels most of which are submerged and pose a threat to navigational channels, the environment and boaters. The FIND program offers financial assistance for fifty percent (50%) of the actual cost for the removal of the derelict vessels. It is estimated that the total cost for the removal of these vessels is $100,000 based on varying lengths and conditions. The vessels will be removed in accordance with the guidelines established by the regulatory agencies and appropriate law enforcement agencies. All efforts will be made to locate the vessels owners in order to recoup costs. Funding for the matching fifty percent (50%) of the grant is available from the Fiscal Year 2004 operating budget.
