Resolution Authorizing City
Manager to Apply to FIND for
Grant to Remove Derelict Vessels
RECOMMENDATION
It is respectfully recommended that the City Commission adopt the attached Resolution
authorizing the City Manager to submit a grant application to the Florida Inland
Navigational District Waterways Assistance Program (FIND) for the removal of
approximately 25 derelict vessels from Dinner Key with matching funds in the amount of
$50,000 allocated from the fiscal year 2004 operating budget.
BACKGROUND
The Department of Conferences, Conventions & Public Facilities is desirous of applying
for grant funds from FIND for the removal of derelict vessels from the City owned bay
bottom in Dinner Key. Presently, there are an estimated twenty-five (25) derelict vessels
most of which are submerged and pose a threat to navigational channels, the environment
and boaters. The FIND program offers financial assistance for fifty percent (50%) of the
actual cost for the removal of the derelict vessels. It is estimated that the total cost for the
removal of these vessels is $100,000 based on varying lengths and conditions. The
vessels will be removed in accordance with the guidelines established by the regulatory
agencies and appropriate law enforcement agencies. All efforts will be made to locate
the vessels owners in order to recoup costs.
Funding for the matching fifty percent (50%) of the grant is available from the Fiscal
Year 2004 operating budget.
Thank you for your favorable consideration.
