HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-04-0103City of Miami Legislation Resolution: R-04-0103 City Hall 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, FL 33133 www.miamigov.com File Number: 04-00137 Final Action Date: 2/26/2004 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION DIRECTING THE DEPARTMENTS OF TRANSPORTATION AND PLANNING AND ZONING TO INITIATE DISCUSSION AND COST ANALYSIS FORATRAFFIC CIRCLE TO HONOR CLYDE KILLENS, ON NORTHWEST 2ND AVENUE BETWEEN NORTHWEST 10TH STREET AND NORTHWEST 14TH STREET, MIAMI, FLORIDA, AND TO REPORT BACK TO THE CITY COMMISSION WITHIN 45 DAYS. WHEREAS, Clyde Killens, affectionately known in South Florida as "Mr. Entertainment," was a beloved and respected Miami entrepreneur who became a "legend in his own time," and was applauded for the commercial success of many of the City of Miami's ("City") well known night clubs; and WHEREAS, Clyde Killens established the City's Overtown community as a venue for Black performing artists during the 1940's, 50's and 60's, and created a cultural treasure in a collection of lobby cards originally produced for events on Overtown's Little Broadway; and WHEREAS, Clyde Killens undertook bold and courageous financial moves to create special activities that appealed to both families and children, for both black and white citizens, invested monies in the community and provided neighborhood gathering spots that added dignity to the City and made a cultural statement to honor those generations of black and white Miamians who have been in Miami since the turn of the century; and WHEREAS, Clyde Killens was not only a show biz impresario, but also an influencial civic -minded community activist who elevated the quality of life in Overtown, by soliciting funds for families stricken with tragedies as he strived to improve commercial establishments that flourished in the community he loved; and WHEREAS, Clyde Killens, a man whose life's passion venerated the art and vibrancy of performance, died on Monday, February 2, 2004, leaving a potent and compelling legacy; and WHEREAS, it is appropriate and in the best interest of the City and its residents and visitors to the City, in appreciation and recognition of Clyde Killens' enduring commitment, to revere this outstanding community leader by creating a traffic circle in his honor; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. The Departments of Transportation and Planning and Zoning are directed to initiate discussion and cost analysis for a traffic circle to honor Clyde Killens, to be located on Northwest 2nd Avenue between Northwest 1Oth Street and Northwest 14th Street, Miami, Florida, and to report back to the City Commission within 45 days. Section 3. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and signature of the Mayor. {1} Footnotes: {1} If the Mayor does not sign this Resolution, it shall become effective at the end of ten calendar days from the date it was passed and adopted. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become effective immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission.
