Acceptance of Grant Funding for the
Ichimura Miami -Japan Garden
For Commission Meeting of 1/22/04
Ordinance
RECOMMENDATION:
It is respectfully recommended that the City Commission accept and appropriate $2,080 in grant
funding for the Ichimura Miami -Japan Garden on Watson Island, from the Miami Dade County
Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council. It is further recommended that the
Commission authorize the execution of an agreement with the funding agency.
BACKGROUND:
Funding in the amount of $16,500 was sought from the granting agency to host a luncheon as one
of several activities during "Kagoshima Week, a celebration of the City of Miami's Sister City
friendship with Kagoshima Japan. The Mayor of Kagoshima and a delegation of government and
industry representatives traveled from Japan to attend the luncheon and visit the construction site of
the Japanese Garden. Due to the reduced award amount of $2,080, grant funds will be utilized for
the creation of promotional materials for the Japanese Garden.
The City of Miami is in the process of rebuilding the Ichimura Miami -Japan Garden on Watson
Island adjacent to the public boat ramp. Once completed, the garden will be a municipal park open
to the public and managed by the Department of Parks and Recreation.
FISCAL IMPACT
NONE.
