HomeMy WebLinkAboutcover memoSecond Reading Ordinance CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA INTEROFFICE MEMORANDUM SR.1 TO: FROM: Honorable Mayor Members of the ity Comrrtlssi Joe Ar iola Chief ministrator/City Manager PATE ; NOV 2 5 2303 SUBJECT : Accept and Appropriate FEMA Grant for the Assistance to Firefighters REFERENCES: Grant Program (FY 2003) ENCLOSURES: Ordinance FILE : FM-131,doc RECOMMENDATION It is respectfully recommended that the City Commission adopt the attached Ordinance accepting a FEMA/Assistance to Firefighters Grant Award (FY 2003) from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in the amount of $750,000, and appropriating said funds in the City's Capital Improvements Project No. 313303, entitled: "Fire Department Computers and Communications," to be used for the Department of Fire -Rescue Fire Operations and Firefighter Safety Program, for the period commencing August 15, 2003 through August 14, 2004. BACKGROUND The Assistance for Firefighters Grant Program is administered by the United States Fire Administration (UEFA), part of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and assists rural, urban and suburban fire departments throughout the United States. These funds are used by the nation's firefighters to increase the effectiveness of firefighting operations, fire fighter health and safety programs, new fire apparatus, emergency medical service programs, and fire prevention and safety programs. This year FEMA awarded a Federal grant to the City of Miami entitled, "FEMA/Assistance to Firefighters Grant Award (FY 2003)", In the amount of $750,000, to be apportioned to continue supporting Local firefighters in carrying out projects in public safety, public health, and emergency response. This award Is the third grant that the Department of Fire -Rescue has been eligible to receive since FEMA began awarding the Assistance for Firefighters grants to various fire departments throughout the United States. Specifically, the City of Miami will use these funds along with the matching funds allocated by the City of Miami Capital Improvement Fund (Project No. 313303, Account Code No. 289401.6.840), in the amount of $400,000, as stipulated by the grant, for the purchase of software and peripheral equipment. It is now appropriate to accept said grant and appropriate the FEMA grant award therein for this fiscal year. Fiscal Impact: None.
