Work set to begin on Coral Gables Museum near Miracle Mile
BY MARILYN BOWDEN
The Coral Gables Museum, on the city's
wish list for a decade, is becoming a
reality.
The museum will be housed in the old
police and fire building at 2801 Salzedo
block north of Miracle Mile. De-
s.6ned by Phineas Phast in 1939, the
building is on the National Register of
Historic Places. Since 1975, it has been
used as office space for the city and other
tenants.
"An architect has been hired," said
Vice Mayor Chip Withers, "and the public
works and other departments are all just
about moved out."
Mr. Withers said he first envisioned a
city art and history museum in 1994.
Donna Lubin, the city's director ofhis-
toric preservation, said Jorge Hernandez
of Jorge Hernandez Architects has been
hired to design the project. Mr. Hernandez,
a full professor at the University of Mi-
, also designed the Brickell Bridge.
Mr. Hernandez said he has put together
a design team that includes historian Ellen
Uguccioni and architect Carter Quina.
The project involves about 13,000 square
feet, Mr. Hernandez said. He said 2,000
square feet will be earmarked for perma-
nent exhibition space and a similar amount
for open gallery space.
"We're also discussing the notion of
display spaces permeating the whole build-
ing," he said, "with some artifacts exhib-
ited in the community meeting room, the
lobbies and so on."
The group has just stated brainstorm-
ing, he said. He added that he would like
to restore the interior to its original state
as much as possible.
"This is a very unusual building, with
solid coral walls within and without," Mr.
Hernandez said. `But over the years, the
coral surfaces of the interior have been
covered and obscured.
"There are rooms that were altered or
changed or lost. We would like to bring
them back. For example, the courtroom

could be restored as a community meeting
room, and the fire -truck garage would be
appropriate as a gallery space.
"A space next to the tower could house
one of the original pink Coral Gables
buses."
A parking lot north ofthe building will
be transformed into a public garden, pos-
sibly a sculpture garden, he said.
"This could be a jewel for the whole
city," Mr. Hernandez said, "because Coral
Gables has few outdoor public plazas."
Ms. Lubin said a parking garage is
under construction across the street.
The museum's board is working with
the Historical Museum of Southern Florida
on the permanent Coral Gables exhibit,
she said.
After an international search, Ms. Lubin
said, the city has hired as curator Mary
Agnes Beach of Hickory, NC, "whose
strength is programs and exhibitions."
A $300,000 grant from the Florida De-
partment of State for restoration of the
building will be used to put up a new roof
and do shell improvements, she said.
If all goes according to schedule, a
capital campaign to raise private funds
should kick off at the beginning of next
year, said board member Joseph M.
Matthews, a partner at Colson Hicks
Eidson who will coordinate the effort.
"This renovation ofan historic building
is a stepped process," he said, "and the
precise amount of funding required will
not be finalized until we get a really good
handle on the costs of the renovation.
"My hope is that by the time we have
finalized that total with the city's commit-
ments, state grants and already -existing
support, we will have well over 50% of
what we need committed."
Mr. Withers said he is optimistic that
construction will be completed by fall
2005.
"Construction isn't dictating the open-
ing now," he said. "We want to open with
Class AAA traveling exhibitions as well
as our own storyline exhibition. That will
drive the opening date."
