• Miami Youth Council Prevention Program
The City of Miami, in collaboration with Miami -Dade County Public Schools, and EXCEL
(Exceptional Consulting for Educational Leaders, Inc. ) operate the Miami Youth Council . This
program is offered at five high schools within the city; Miami Central Senior High, Miami Edison
Senior High, Miami Senior High, Booker T. Washington Senior High, and Miami Jackson Senior
High. This program provides students the ability to enhance and engage in school and
community developments. They develop cognitive, social, and emotional health through
leadership development; increase their community engagement through civic education and
service learning; empower them through the development of civic action plans driven by youth
concerns and using City resources; and expose them to potential job paths, leading to
competence, self -efficiency and pro -social norms.
• Family -First Parent Academy Prevention Program
The City of Miami's Family First -Parent Academy prepares infants, toddlers and their caregivers
for school readiness. The program is a cooperative effort between the City of Miami's Office of
the Mayor, EXCEL (Exceptional Consulting for Educational Leaders, Inc. ), Miami -Dade County
Public Schools -Parent Academy, Miami -Dade Family Learning Partnership, WLRN Ready to
Learn and Gymboree Play & Music. Each partner uses a variety of best practice techniques in
order to offer parenting classes and activities that are tailored to address the core goals of the
program. The Families First -Parent Academy offers programming designed to incorporate
parent-child activities that strengthen oral language development, give parents a venue to share
concerns and learn new strategies, as well as connect parents/ caregivers with a variety of
services to support their stability. The program seeks to empower parents/caregivers with the
skills needed to develop their children's innate abilities.
• Out —of -School Miami Learning Zone Program
The City of Miami will provide an after-school and Saturday program for 120 students ages 8 -12
attending Holmes Elementary School. This program is a collaborative effort between The City of
Miami, Holmes Elementary School, YMCA, Arts for Learning/Miami, Inc, Big Brothers Big Sisters,
Mad Science of South Florida, and On Target Math. This program will be conducted during the
school year, and will be comprised of a range of activities focusing on enhancing reading,
physical fitness, and social skills. Additional components include science and math workshops
and mentoring.
