HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-10-0316Vop City of Miami ' Legislation < U R �O Resolution: R-10-0316 File Number: 10-00892 City Hall 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, FL 33133 www.miamigov.com Final Action Date: 7/22/2010 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION URGING CONGRESS TO FUND THE PORT OF MIAMI DEEP DREDGE PROJECT, WHICH WOULD DEEPEN MIAMI HARBOR TO FIFTY (50) FEET TO ACCOMMODATE THE WORLD'S LARGEST CARGO CONTAINER VESSELS; DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE OFFICIALS STATED HEREIN. WHEREAS, in 2014, large numbers of Post Panamax megaships that previously off loaded cargo on the West Coast of the United States, will instead traverse the expanded Panama Canal en route to East Coast destinations, thereby potentially giving the Port of Miami a chance to significantly expand its cargo business; and WHEREAS, Miami, is the "Gateway of the Americas" and the Port of Miami is the closest one to Panama on the Eastern Seaboard which makes it the logical place for the new, larger ships to make their first calls; and WHEREAS, in an effort to accommodate these vessels, the Port of Miami needs to deepen Miami Harbor ("Deep Dredge Project"); and WHEREAS, Mayor Tomas Regalado along with Miami -Dade County Mayor Carlos Alvarez and other local elected and business leaders have joined in requesting federal funding in the amount of $75 million in the upcoming 2012 Appropriations Act to commence the Deep Dredge Project that will enable the Port of Miami to double its cargo capacity of the next decade; and WHEREAS, the United States Congress has already given the approval to dredge to the required fifty (50) foot depth, and the Army Corp of Engineers will complete the planning and design of said project by next summer, but needs the funding in order to put the project to bid and to adhere to a 2014 project completion timeline; and WHEREAS, the City of Miami and Miami -Dade County are striving to complete the project in 2014 to coincide with the opening of the new Port Tunnel linking the interstate system with the Port of Miami and also with the widening of the Panama Canal; and WHEREAS, the Deep Dredge Project is the most important infrastructure project in the State of Florida and has been called a "nationally significant project" by the Army Corps of Engineers"; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Resolution. Section 2. Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to President Barack Obama, the Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Senators Bill Nelson and George LeMieux, and to the Miami -Dade County Congressional Legislative Delegation. Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and signature of the Mayor. {1 } Footnotes: {1} If the Mayor does not sign this Resolution, it shall become effective at the end of ten calendar days from the date it was passed and adopted. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become effective immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission.
