A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION PROCLAIMING JULY, 2010
"PARKS AND RECREATION MONTH" TO CONTINUE A TRADITION ESTABLISHED
IN 1985, CELEBRATING JULY AS THE OFFICIAL PARKS AND RECREATION
MONTH IN AMERICA; FURTHER SUPPORTING THE POLICIES OF THE
NATIONAL RECREATION AND PARKS ASSOCIATION.
WHEREAS, parks and recreation programs are an integral part of communities throughout the
United States, including the City of Miami; and
WHEREAS, our parks and recreation are vitally important to establishing and maintaining the
quality of life, ensuring the health of citizens, and contributing to the economic and environmental
well-being of a community and region; and
WHEREAS, parks and recreation programs build healthy, active communities that aid in the
prevention of chronic disease, provide therapeutic recreation services for those who are mentally or
physically disabled, and also improve the mental and emotional health of all citizens; and
WHEREAS, parks and recreation programs increase a community's economic prosperity
through increased property values, expansion of the local tax base, increased tourism, the attraction
and retention of businesses, and crime reduction; and
WHEREAS, parks and recreation areas are fundamental to the environmental well-being of
the community; and
WHEREAS, parks and natural recreation areas improve water quality, protect groundwater,
prevent flooding, improve the air quality, provide vegetative buffers to development, and produce
habitat for wildlife; and
WHEREAS, parks and natural recreation areas ensure the ecological beauty of communities
and provide a place for children and adults to connect with nature and recreate outdoors; and
WHEREAS, the United States House of Representatives has designated July as "Parks and
Recreation Month"; and
WHEREAS, the City of Miami recognizes the benefits derived from parks and recreation
resources;
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI,
FLORIDA:

Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted
by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section.
Section 2. The Miami City Commission proclaims July, 2010 "Parks and Recreation Month" to
continue a tradition established in 1985, celebrating July as the official Parks and Recreation Month in
America and to support the policies of the National Recreation and Parks Association.
Section 3. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and signature
of the Mayor. {2}
Footnotes:
{1} If the Mayor does not sign this Resolution, it shall become effective at the end of (10) calendar
days from the date it was passed and adopted. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become
effective immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission.
