BACKGROUND INFORMATION.
The City is working with the Miami -Dade Broadband Coalition (MDBC) on a digital equality training
program in the Overtown and/or Liberty City neighborhoods. This pilot program would involve
providing 50 hours of formal digital skills training to approximately 120 residents at an Elevate eParks
Learning Centers near the chosen locations. The intent of the program is to provide basic technology
skills for the participants to better prepare them for employment opportunities in the Miami area.
Individuals completing this training would be awarded a refurbished computer that would become a
household asset and possibly free internet access (supplied by the Coalition) for one year.
MDBC's goal is to construct a robust broadband network that will connect community anchor
institutions throughout Miami -Dade County and extend broadband services to our underserved
communities. This initiative will create efficiencies in the delivery of healthcare, education and
government - impacting our economy, improving public safety, and creating jobs. The Coalition has
been awarded a grant from the Knight Foundation for Digital Excellence and is pursuing ARRA
broadband stimulus grants.
