Final Action Date:
A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION EXPRESSING SUPPORT
FOR THE 2018 OR 2022 FIFA WORLD CUP BEING HELD IN THE CITY OF
MIAMI; DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS
RESOLUTION TO THE MIAMI-DADE SPORTS COMMISSION.
WHEREAS, Miami is an international city, made up of more than 37 cultures and nationalities; and
WHEREAS, the City of Miami ("City") is home to soccer fans from around the world; and
WHEREAS, the United States hosted the 1994 FIFA World Cup, which still holds the record for the
highest attendance in history at a World Cup game which averaged 69,000 fans per game and 3.6
million attendees overall; and
WHEREAS, Miami would benefit from serving as the host city for the 2018 or 2022 FIFA World
Cup; and
WHEREAS, the economic impact to the City would be overwhelmingly positive, providing national
and international exposure for Miami through the many media outlets, including the millions of
television viewers; and
WHEREAS, the location of the 2018 and the 2022 FIFA World Cup will be chosen before the end
of 2010, and the Major League Soccer organization and the United States of America World Cup Bid
Committee is urging citizens and soccer fans to vote online to bring the FIFA World Cup to the, United
States; and
WHEREAS, the Miami City Commission and Mayor Tomas Regalado urge the citizens of the City
and its employees to support bringing the FIFA World Cup to Miami by signing the petition found at
www.gousabid.com/miami by June 11, 2010, which is the start of the FIFA World Cup in South Africa;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI,
FLORIDA:
Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by
reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section.
Section 2. The Miami City Commission expresses support for the 2018 or 2022 FIFA World Cup
being held in the City of Miami.
Section 3. The Miami City Commission urges the City citizens and all City employees to support
this endeavor by signing the petition found at www.gousabid.com/miami

Section 4. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to the Miami -Dade Sports

Section 5. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and signature of

Footnotes:
{1} If the Mayor does not sign this Resolution, it shall become effective at the end of ten calendar days
from the date it was passed and adopted. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become
effective immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission.
