AIRCRAFT NOISE MONITORS (CITY OF MIAMI)
PURPOSE OF PERMANENT NOISE MONITORS
COUNTY
In response to community concerns over aircraft noise and aircrafts operations from Miami
International Airport (MIA), the Miami -Dade Aviation Department (MDAD) installed permanent aircraft
noise monitors (microphones) in the environ communities of MIA. The purpose of the monitors is to
determine existing noise levels and to continuously monitor the area to insure cumulative noise levels
do not rise. These monitors are part of MIA's Aircraft Noise and Operations Monitoring System
(ANOMS) which utilizes both radar and noise monitors to track aircraft throughout the County.
NOISE MONITOR SELECTION & LOCATIONS
In determining potential sites for permanent noise monitors a number of parameters were identified.
Most of this criteria is typical of virtually all noise monitoring site analyses and include:
• Location of existing and future aircraft flight corridors.
• Location of existing and future DNL 65 and above noise contours.
• Historic location of noise complaints.
• Minimization of potential for noise to reflect off walls and buildings.
• Minimal background noise levels (high surface traffic volumes, HVAC, etc.).
• Availability and ease of connection to electrical services.
• Availability and ease of connection to phone service.
• Clearance of site from overhead lines, trees or structures.
• Avoidance of the need to cut driveways, sidewalks or roadway pavements.
• Site acceptance by monitor provider.
SITE COST
As of march 2010, Miami -Dade Aviation department (MDAD) has not incurred any cost and/or paid any
amount associated with any of its permanent aircraft noise monitor sites/locations.
