Program Summary
Do The Right Thing is a 501 (c) 3, not-for-profit organization which operates in cooperation
with the Miami Police Department to recognize and reward the positive behavior,
accomplishments and good deeds of youths in the Miami area. Now in its 20th year of
operation, the program is a highly successful, crime prevention initiative which continues to
grow locally, nationally and internationally.
DO THE RIGHT THING PROJECT OVERVIEW
2008-2009 School Year
Do The Right Thing Awards Program: A monthly recognition and rewards initiative to
reinforce the positive behavior, accomplishments and good deeds of area youths.
*5,000 Miami -Dade County students served annually
* Fifty-one percent of City of Miami public schools participated (district -wide)
Do The Right Thing "Back Without A Bang!" Anti -Violence Youth Rally: A back -to -
school youth rally against violence where City of Miami fifth grade students take a special
"Victory Against Violence" pledge led by the Chief of Police.
* 800 City of Miami students served (district -wide)
Do The Right Thing "Rap It Up!" Crime Prevention Contest
An annual contest offered to Miami -Dade County Public Schools in which students write
and perform their own anti-crime rap songs to promote crime prevention awareness.
* 250 Miami -Dade County students participated
Do The Right Thing Trip to London:
An annual trip to London for middle and high school "Special Recognition" winners and
MPD chaperones.
*9 Miami -Dade County students awarded annually
Do The Right Thing Trip to Disney World:
An annual trip to Disney World for nine elementary school "Special Recognition" winners
and MPD chaperones.
*9 Miami -Dade County students awarded annually

Do The Right Thing "Chill Out!" Stress Management Seminar Series:
An annual seminar for City of Miami elementary, middle and high school students where
they learn stress management techniques including yoga, nutrition and test -taking strategies
prior to FCATs.
*300 City of Miami students participated from Eneida Hartner Elementary,
Miami Edison Middle and School for Applied Technology
Do The Right Thing Summer Salute Awards Dinner:
An end -of -the -school -year dinner to recognize the 90 top students for the year, participating
schools, sponsors and volunteers.
