Thompson City Clerk CARLOS A. GIMENEZ COMMISSIONER MIAMI - DADE COUNTY BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS DISTRICT 7 January 25, 2010 Mr. Knut Frostad Volvo Ocean Race, S.L.U. Edificio Antigua Estacion Maritima, Muelle no 10 de Lavante, Puerto de Alicante, 03001 Alicante, Spain Re: Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012, Miami stopover bid Dear Mr. Frostad: I understand that a volunteer, citizen working group here in Greater Miami is preparing a bid package for Robert Datnow at The Sports Consultancy, in hope that Miami will be chosen as the North. American stopover during Spring 2012. Please consider this letter an expression of my full personal support for Miami's bid, as well as my commitment to encourage Miami -Dade County, other government jurisdictions and private - sector organizations to collaborate in producing a world-class event should our bid effort succeed. As a former City Manager of the City of Miami, I fully understand that the proposed downtown site – a portion of City -owned Bicentennial Park and nearby County -owned "Parcel B" adjacent to the American Airlines Arena, both on Biscayne Bay—is the premier available location along the entire Atlantic seaboard. And now as a County Commissioner, representing a waterfront district that includes four of our community's five yachting and sailing clubs, I remain an enthusiastic champion of competitive sailing ... of which the Volvo Ocean Race is the worldwide leader. In the past, Miami has demonstrated its ability to serve as a stopover site. I am confident we will perform even better, at that same highly functional location, if selected again. As the gateway to the Americas, our city is a vibrant, international destination for tourism and commerce, the ideal marketplace for the global businesses so heavily invested in the Race itself.
