HomeMy WebLinkAboutSubmittal-Commissioner Sarnoff..TITLE A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION AUTHORIZING THE USE OF THE FEC SLIP AND A PORTION OF BICENTENNIAL PARK TO BE USED FOR THE VOLVO OCEAN RACE 2012 OCCURRING MAY 24, 2012 THROUGH JUNE 11, 2012, WITH AN AGREEMENT TO BE BOUGHT BACK TO THE CITY COMMISSION FOR APPROVAL SHOULD TEAM MIAMI, LLC WIN SAID BID .body BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The Miami City Commission authorizes the use of the FEC slip and a portion of Bicentennial Park to be used for the Volvo Ocean Race 2012, occurring May 24, 2012 through June 11, 2012, with an agreement to be bought back to the City Commission for approval should Team Miami, LLC win said bid. Section 2. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and signature of the Mayor. {1 } APPROVAL AS TO FORM AND CORRECTNESS: JULIE O. BRU CITY ATTORNEY ..Footnote {1 } If the Mayor does not sign this Resolution, it shall become effective at the end of ten calendar days from the date it was passed and adopted. I am writing to express my full personal support.of Miami's bid to 'host a stopover in 2012 in the next Volvo Ocean Race and my full support to encouraging the City to provide whatever it can to hosting the event if our bid succeeds. The City of Miami welcomes the opportunity to host a stopover in Miami again, f as a .complement to our sailing and sporting heritage, to continue to provide a program of events appealing to a wide cross-section of our diverse community in central downtown and to promote the City of Miami internationally through sport]. While I speak for myself in pledging my support, I shall also recommend that the City administration resolves to give the bid and a potential stopover here whatever support it can. While this support will not come in the form of a cash contribution nor financial guarantees, 1 would like to think, in time, this might, with my recommendation, translate into the provision of City police, fire, sanitation and other required public services as budget -relieving value in kind. ;Submitted into the public record in connection with item NA.4 on 01-28-10 Priscilla A. Thompson City Clerk I shall also give whatever help I can and recommend the City resolvelikewise to support the efforts of Team Miami LLC in securing conditional commitments of .the land required (in Bicentennial Park from the Bayfront Trust and in front of :the American Airlines Arena from the County, used the last time the Race stopped in Miami), and in their efforts to secure conditional funding or underwriting from the commercial sector to,guarantee the host;portbudget if we are awarded the stopover.
