HISTORY OF ACTION COMMUNITY CENTER INC.
%,%JM Will" CENTER, INC.
Currently, there are about 8.4 million senior citizens who depend on others for their
transportation Shortly, the number of older drivers will more than double, making the
issue of senior transportation even more critical. In fact, according to the Administration
on Aging, by the year 2030 the number of drivers over age 85 will be 4-5 times what it is
today. Because America's roads and automobiles are not designed for the existing elderly
population --and because the skills and abilities associated with driving tend to, diminish
with age—viable alternate forms of transportation for the elderly will continue to be an
important issue for years to .come.
Action Community Service has been providing community support transportation service
since 1472 to the elderly, handicapped and disabled in Miami -Dade for nearly four
decades. We have served more than 150,000 passengers over the years and. completed
over 1 million one way Vis. Our service has permitted ACC to distinguish itself as a
leader in the disability transportation community.
Adequate transportation is important to the well-being of elderly persons. Action
Community Center's progrmn provides transportation to seniors for a variety of activities
including medical appointments, personal shopping, and nutritional programs. ACC
transportation is typically provided using minibuses which require advance reservations,
and offer pick-up and drop-off transportation. door to doer. This program is important
for elderly, handicapped and disabled individuals who cannot use more traditional means
of public transportation and lack- more informal sources of transportation..

Dear Mayor Regalado,

RE: Action Community Center's Request from Operative Funds till
September 30, 2090
According to the National Center on Senior Transportation, "transportation is one
of the most crucial issues facing older adults and the communities where they
live." The seriousness of this issue, which is further documented by hundreds of
research studies and reports generated by local and national organizations alike,
is under intense review by public and private organizations dedicated to the
safety and well-being of senior citizens, and by coracemed and progressive
communities across the country.
Unfortunately, the resources to do so have not been readily available for ACC
this past year. That is why when the opportunity arose, to be placed on the City .
of Miami's calendar for review of operative funds; we enthusiastically stepped up
to respond and to communicate tine severe ruts and sacrifice that the agency
has endured to (continue to provide uninterrupted service to the handicapped.
elderly and disabled. We are seeking at this time with, imminent irnportance that
ACC is granted an additional budget of $220k to continue, to maintain its services
till September 39, 2090. Without the allocation :of such funds ACC will
experience unforeseeable closure of its services after nearly four decades of
service to the disabled, handicapped end elderly community.
