SECTION 11— GRANT REQUEST OVERVIEW
33149
A. Grant Title (Project Name): Virginia Key Beach Park Recreation Enhancement Project
B. Project/Land Address: 4020 Virginia Beach Drive, Miami, FI 33149
C. County Commission District in which project/land is located: District 2, Dorrin Rolle
D. Brief Grant Description: The proposed project provides for the addition of a new
playground 12 park benches 12 picnic tables and a Message Center at the northern end of
Historic Virginia Key Beach Park. The goal of the project is to provide more play space using
the latest in playground equipment, designed to stimulate both mind and body and to allow
visitors to enjoy another parcel of the Park's 82.4 acres. The outcome of the project will be
improved play and the ability to tie play to the Park's mission to reinforce the message of the
Park's history of equal treatment for all and an increase in the number of children to the site.
The playground will be constructed adjacent to the newly renovated historic shelters which
presently do not have a play area for visitors utilizing the rear picnic facilities. The Virginia Key
RFP SNP0809 FUNDING APPLICATION
Beach Park Trust plans to group the historic features of the park's property with additional play
features that have a strong appeal and which provide an adventurous play experience,
incorporating opportunities for discovery. The creation of the proposed playground is designed
to teach children and adults the importance of cultural diversity. The playground's special
features will include activities that compliment our cultural historic park elements such as a
train function play area, Drum Circle and Theater Station. These active experiences involve
imagination, social skills, exploration, music, learning and fantasy --creating an outdoor
classroom effect in the play space. The Drum Circle will bring music and motion to the
Playground and include a GT Jams Playbook--curriculum which meets national standards for
music and physical education. The proposed ground level play opportunities will enhance
integration among all children and will serve over 70 children frequency between the apes of 3
— 12 years old. The playground will meet ADA and Consumer Product Safety Commission
guidelines. The purchase of additional benches, picnic tables and a message center will
complete the enhancement of the northern area picnic facilities. Two of the picnic tables will be
designed to accommodate the needs of visitors with disabilities. The new park accessories will
be made from "Everlasting Lumber", a superior recycled plastic lumber and will be resistant to
stains, mildew, bacteria, rotting and insects and requires very little (if any) maintenance. The
frames for the picnic tables are made of galvanized steel tubing selected for extreme durability
and resistance to rotting. The new children's play area will enhance the overall attractiveness
of the park, adding to the children's interaction within the 82 -acre property. The additional
amenities will improve the park's competitiveness to serve as a neighborhood venue with
family facilities. It will play a key role in helping to promote physical activity and wellness habits
for families in the Miami -Dade communities.
