A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION URGING GOVERNOR
CHARLIE CRIST AND MEMBERS OF THE FLORIDA LEGISLATURE TO
CODESIGNATE SOUTHWEST 8TH STREET FROM SOUTHWEST 10TH AVENUE
TO SOUTHWEST 12TH AVENUE, MIAMI, FLORIDA, AS "BRIGADA 2506 STREET,
CARLOS RODRIGUEZ SANTANA"; FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO
TRANSMITA COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN DESIGNATED
OFFICES.
WHEREAS, in May, 1960, the Central Intelligence Agency began to recruit Cuban exiles to
attempt the military overthrow of the Cuban government headed by Fidel Castro; and
WHEREAS, Carlos Rodriguez Santana, enlisted in a brigade and was assigned identification
number 2506; and
WHEREAS, on September 7, 1960, during training exercises at Camp Trax in Guatemala, Carlos
Rodriguez Santana fell off of a mountain, thousands of feet to his death; and
WHEREAS, as the first to give his life in the effort to free Cuba, the training group decided to take
on his identification number and thereafter the brigrade was called Brigade 2506;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI,
FLORIDA:
Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by
reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section.
Section 2. The Miami City Commission urges Governor Crist and the members of the Florida
Legislature to codesignate Southwest 8th Street from Southwest 10th Avenue to Southwest 12th
Avenue, Miami, Florida, as "Brigada 2506 Street, Carlos Rodriguez Santana."
Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Governor Charlie
Crist, Senate President Jeff Atwater, Speaker of the House Larry Cretul, the Chair and Members of
the Miami -Dade State Legislative Delegation, and Stephanie C. Kopelousos, the Secretary of the
Florida Department of Transportation.
Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and signature of
the Mayor.{1 }

{1 } If the Mayor does not sign this Resolution, it shall become effective at the end of ten calendar
days from the date it was passed and adopted. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become
effective immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission.
