Title of Project: Crime Prevention and Technology Upgrades
Dollar Amount Requested: $2,562,410.
Police officers are on the front line making communities safer, implementing effective
techniques to get violent criminals off the streets and behind bars. The allocation of critical
resources such as support staff and equipment to maintain Police are essential to the
enhancement of law enforcement capabilities. The City of Miami Police Department (MPD)
currently faces an urgent need to link its ever expanding technology requirements with its crime
fighting efforts. MPD currently has 1,124 officers,
Last year the MPD broke ground on a first -of -a -kind institution, the Miami Police
College and Miarni-Dade High School of Law Studies, I-Iomeland Security and Forensic
Sciences. This facility is expected to open during 2009. To help staff this facility and to keep up
with and counter the increase in crime as a direct result of the current economic climate and
resulting chronic unemployment, MPD will hire two Information Technology Technicians, one
Senior Staff Analyst, one Accountant, two Crime Analysts, three Administrative Assistants and
three Aides, and two Maintenance Mechanics.
As a part of its strategy, MPD will hire additional civilian staff in order to ensure that
sworn law enforcement are more available on the street in an effort to reduce and prevent crime.
The creation of fourteen new jobs will help to guarantee that Miatni Police Officers are more
accessible to make the intensive efforts necessary to protect our most vulnerable communities
and populations. Deliverables include; 1) Number of jobs created; 2) an increase in essential
service delivery and 3) increased efficiency
MPD will continue its coordination efforts between the citizens of Miami, the U.S.
Attorney's Office, the Department of Drug Enforcement Administration, the FBI, the State
Attorney's Office, City of Miami Mayor's Office, Miami -Dade Mayor's Office, Miami -Dade
Police Department, Miami -Dade County Public Schools, City of Miami Homeless Assistance
Program and the City of Miami Neighborhood Enhancement Team,
