Subject: Authorizing the Acceptance of an Award of a COPS Hiring Recovery Program Grant
Purpose of Item:
A Resolution of the Miami City Commission, with attachments, authorizing the City Manager to
accept funding, in an amount not to exceed $11,086,850.00, consisting of a grant award from the
U.S. Department of Justice/Office of Community Oriented Policing Services, for the COPS Hiring
Recovery Program (CHRP); further authorizing the City Manager to execute the grant agreement, in
substantially the attached form, and all necessary documents to implement the acceptance of and
administration of said grant.
Background Information:
The City of Miami submitted a grant application to the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Community
Oriented Policing Services, to hire 75 officers. However, the U. S. Department of Justice awarded
funding for up to 50 officer positions. The COPS Hiring Recovery Program award provides federal
funds over a three-year grant period towards the salaries and fringe benefits of up to 50 officers. This
grant does not require any match amount from the City of Miami; however, the City must retain the
funded positions for at least one year after the grant ends.
