Biscayne Blvd.,Suite 800 Miami, Florida 33131 305 374 9216 T 305374 9217 F www.borgesarchifects.com April 12, 2007 Kathleen Slesnick Kauffman Historic Preservation Officer City of Miami Historic and Environmental Preservation Board 444 SW 2nd Ave., 3rd Floor Miami, FL 33129 RR. 2110 Brickell Avenue project tree appeal hearing Dear Ms. Kauffman, This letter is to provide background information accompanying our revised submittal to the Historic and Environmental Preservation Board (HEPB) regarding the tree removal application for 2110 Brickell Ave. As you will recall, during the hearing on this project in front of the HEPB on April 3, 2007, the Board voted that we do not remove trees numbered 1, 4 and 5 on our plans. As per this decision, we returned to the site in order to gain more accurate locations of these trees in relation to our project. The locations of these trees are shown on our revised sheets A-200, A-201, A-202, A-203 and A-204. We found that trees numbered 4 and 5 could be successfully accommodated into the project, and we revised the driveway so that it would be constructed of pavers on fill, in order to cause less interference with the roots of tree number 4. However, our further investigation found that the center of the trunk of tree number one is actually only 3 feet away from the front wall of the building. Because of the proximity of this tree to the building, there is no way to accommodate this tree without completely redesigning the project, which is not feasible, as the project is in the final stages of the building permit process. Due to the conflict of this tree with our proposed project, and the poor condition of the tree, as documented by our certified arborist consultant's report, we are requesting that the Board allow the removal of this tree. We are proposing to plant a large shade tree in the front of the site as part of our mitigation, and we have been in contact with growers in Central Florida who have confirmed that they can provide a Live Oak tree with an 8" caliper, 16-18' spread and 22'-28' height at time of planting. We are attempting to meet with the neighbor who filed the appeal prior to the HEPB meeting in order to gain her support on this request.
