Subject: To authorize Amendment No. 2 to therg ant agreement with Museum of Science, Inc. d/b/a
Miami Museum of Science and Planetarium ("MMOS"), which increases the grant amount by $1,262,000
from $1,438,000 to a total amount not to exceed $2,700,000, to support the development of a new
museum facility in the City -owned Bicentennial Park.
Purpose of Item:
To authorize Amendment No. 2 to the grant agreement with MMOS, which increases the grant amount by
$1,262,000 from $1,43 8,000 to a total amount not to exceed $2,700,000, to support the development of a new
museum facility in the City -owned Bicentennial Park. MMOS will also utilize $713,625 of the $1,262,000 to
serve as a match for a grant from the U.S. Dept. of Energy, and has further identified matching expenditures for
the remaining $548,375, as detailed in Exhibit A-2. Further authorizing the City Manager to execute the
amendment, allocating funds from B -78502A, the Capital Improvement Project entitled "Miami Science
Museum - Development in Bicentennial Park".
Background Information:
The MMOS recently received formal notification of a $713,625 award from the National Technology
Laboratory of the U.S. Dept. of Energy for a Renewable Energy project. The grant will fund the MMOS's
approach to the use of renewable energy at the new museum. In order to secure this grant they must show a
minimum of 50 % matching dollars, which will be provided by this legislation. This amendment also releases
the remaining funds allocated to the Museum, which will also be matched to Museum spending. The funds will
be provided on a reimbursement basis and are subject to the requirements of the Homeland
Defense/Neighborhood Improvement bond program.
