HomeMy WebLinkAboutLegislation' City of Miami " 4 ...... a Legislation Discussion Item File Number: 09-00692 City Hall 35DO Pan American Drive Miami, FL 33133 www.miamigov.com Final Action Date: A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION RECOGNIZING SEPTEMBER, 2009, AS "NICARAGUAN -AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH" IN THE CITY OF MIAMI. WHEREAS, Nicaraguan -Americans constitute the second-largest Hispanic community in the State of Florida and one of the largest Hispanic communities in Miami; and WHEREAS, Miami's Nicaraguan population began its rapid growth in September, 1972, following an earthquake in Managua, Nicaragua; and WHEREAS, the largest group of Nicaraguan immigrants arrived in the State of Florida in September, 1979, after escaping the communist regime in Nicaragua; and WHEREAS, this influx of new citizens has helped contribute to the economy of the City of Miami ("City") and to an increase in trade between Florida and Nicaragua; and WHEREAS, Nicaraguan -Americans also contribute significantly to the cultural diversity and richness of the City; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble of this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The Miami City Commission recognizes September, 2009 as "Nicaraguan -American Heritage Month" in the City of Miami, and the people of the City are called upon to observe the month by participating in programs, ceremonies, and activities celebrating the historical and cultural contributions of Nicaraguan -Americans. Section 3. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and signature of the Mayor. (1) APPROVED AS TO FORM AND CORRECTNESS/ JULIE O.
