as a Category "A" surplus stock and authorizing the donation of this surplus stock to the Humane Society of
Greater Miami.
Commissioner Samoff visited the Humane Society of Greater Miami located at 16101 West Dixie
Highway this past March and was sincerely impressed with the animal facility. The facility is in
impeccable condition and the dogs and cats are treated with genuine love and care by the center's
employees and volunteers. The center is a "no -kill" facility which means they keep the dogs and cats for
as long as it takes, until they find a new home. The 501 (3) (c) non-profit, charitable animal welfare
organization, does not euthanize dogs or cats in healthy or treatable physical condition and indicative of
non-aggressive behavior. They also handle low-cost spaying and neutering. This non-profit
organization is entirely funded through donations, grants, and fundraising activities. It receives no
government funding and no financial assistance from any other animal welfare organization. While the
commissioner is very fond of the dog statue in his office, he feels strongly that it would better suited in
the Humane Society of Greater Miami as a show -piece to welcome visitors in their lobby. In closing, the
city's contribution, through the Office of Commissioner Sarnoff, of the dog statue is in support of this
particular public purpose in providing quality animal services to the general public and a gesture that
people of the City of Miami appreciate all the work and services they perform.
