1. Program Summary (Limit to 100 words):
The City of Miami Department of Park and Recreation's Heart of Our Parks program will provide
after school services for 360 general population children, including 15 children with disabilities,
between the ages of 6 and 14 residing in the city of Miami. Participants will be engaged in a full
comprehensive after school program with the emphasis on the following: academic component;
reading, physical education and family involvement activities, including field trips.
2. Target Population (Include the number to be served, ages, demographic
characteristics, disabilities, and targeted geographic area(s) served, as applicable):
The program will serve 360 youth ages 6-14 of both genders, predominately African American
and Hispanic, from low income households in neighborhoods throughout the City of Miami,
including Allapattah, Coconut Grove, Coral Way, Little Havana, Model City, and Overtown. Of the
360 participants, the program will serve between 15 children with mild to moderate disabilities
(i.e., Learning Disabled, Educable/Trainable Mentally Handicapped, Emotionally Handicapped,
Physically Impaired, etc.) at one site in the Flagami area.
3. Service Delivery: After -School - August, 2008 to June, 2009

Homework Assistance
GP -Homework Assistance -Heart of Our Parks
345 GP staff provide homework assistance to students to
15 CWD ensure timely and correct completion.
1.Literacy Program
The Heart of Our Park Literacy Program is
designed as a reading and motivational program to
address the literacy needs of individual students.
Students will be engaged in focused literacy
345 GP instruction, using a selection of children's
15 CWD literature, different genres of writing, and other
connected activities to enhance and develop their
speaking, listening, reading, writing, critical
thinking and social skills. The themes for the
academic year are "Build It/Construct It!", "Can
You Hear Me?" and "Get On the ARK -Acts of
Random Kindness, (Character Development).

CWD-At Sandra Delucca our site for children's with
disabilities, a teacher will be provided for
instruction of the literary thematic units. The
teacher will modify curriculum as needed to meet
the needs of this population utilizing a variety of
multi-sensory learning materials to meet a wide-
variety of learner needs
Each unit of study will be developed by the Miami-
Dade Family Learning Partnership. All lessons in
the curriculum have been correlated to meet the
Miami-Dade Public School Competency Based-
Curriculum Standards as well as the Florida
Sunshine Standards.
The literacy curriculum will focus on reading/re-
telling, phonological and phonemic awareness,
shared reading, comprehension, story elements,
the writing process, and vocabulary. Critical
thinking skills and visual arts will compliment the
literacy curriculum through hands-on activities
using inquiry based instruction and observation
strategies.
Two/Three days per week, instruction will be
conducted by a certified reading teacher. Each
teacher will introduce the thematic unit, build on
prior knowledge and introduce the reading genre.
Field trips: Field trips will take place on Teacher
Work Days and breaks. Selected field trips are driven
by literacy topics. Sites selected to visit are the
Museum of Science, Metro Zoo, Parrot Jungle, Miami
Children's Theater, IMAX Museum of Science, Miami
Children's Museum, and Butterfly World.

i.b Integrated Literacy
1.b.iMiami Dade Family Learning Partnership
345 GP will Provide detailed literacy lessons for the 2 other
days of instruction that the sub -contractors Arts

thematic unit that will be universal for all programs
participating in this grant. Each site will follow the
same literacy thematic unit, have the same scope
and sequence and utilize the same selection of
genres.
1.b.ii Arts for Learning (Visual Arts) -The
visual arts component of the literacy curriculum
will include graphic novels, drawing and book
illustrations, and Reader's Theater. These visual
arts activities will be facilitated by Arts for
Learning.

the thematic unit, building upon prior reading
knowledge and introduction to various reading
genres. Review of selected vocabulary words and
phonetic awareness. Discussion of selected books,
the key characters, alternative endings, etc.
Arts Activities: Children will create their own
illustrations to accompany storylines, develop new
narratives based on illustrations, creating graphic
novels, and interpret the lessons learned in
multiple mediums. The visual arts component also
includes graphic arts drawings and illustrations and
Reader's Theater.

4. Family Involvement:
Our Family Involvement Program is designed to
accomplish two goals: increasing families'
understanding of their children's growth and
development and increasing the amount of time
families are engaged in meaningful activities with
their children. (i.e. family field day, family Easter
Celebration, etc.) Amigos for Kids will host all Family
Involvement activities at Jose Marti Park.
4.a Nutrition Workshop: The City of Miami Parks
and Recreation Department in conjunction with
partnering agencies will host one nutrition awareness
campaign activity in each park site. Families will
learn time saving techniques for preparation of
nutritious meals. They will learn about the
importance of reading the labels of food purchased.
Both children and parents will explore fruit and
vegetables indigenous to various cultures and

receive recipe books with quick and easy meals.
4.b.Reading Motivational Familv Literacv Event:
Each site will host one Readiing Motivational Family
Literacy Event at their park. These events will
spotlight the importance of reading, and the role that
families reading together can play in a child's
development. This event includes suggested reading
material for parents, tips for incorporating reading in
a fun manner into family time, storytelling, literacy
production, and family activities. Each theme of the
activity will be created using input from the park
manager, site demographics, and its site needs
(phonetics, vocabulary exploration, FCAT prep, etc.) .
This event will be facilitated by the staff at Miami
Dade Family Learning Partnership.
4.c. Building Better Readers The City of Miami in
partnership with the Miami -Dade Family Learning
Partnership will host (1) City -Wide Families Building
Better Readers Training for all park participants and
their families at one central location. In one location,

development, learn good study habits, and understand
FCAT requirements and proper test preparation
techniques. Families Building Better Readers (FBBR) is
an innovative family literacy workshop. More than just
teaching parents about reading, FBBR demonstrates
ways parents can help their children get the most out of
reading practice at home. This session is facilitated by .
Dr. Angela Martin from the Department of Education.
4.e Ensemble Performances:, Arts for Learning
will provide African Square, Armbrister, Duarte,
Sandra DeLucca, Shenandoah and Williams Parks
wthl ensemble performances that incorporate
exposure to various forms of arts that coincide with
subjects covered in the literary thematic units and
physical education. Each park will be offered a
performance (6 on site) and 1 end of the year
cumulative performance at the End of year expo.
4.p Heart of Our Parks end of the year Out of
School family expo: Each park site, agency a,
program participant and parent will be invited to
attend the end of the year program expo hosted at
the Miami Museum of Science. These culminating
event will be spear headed by the City of Miami with
the collaboration of partnering agencies Amigos for
Kids, Arts for Learning, The Miami Dade Family
Learning Partnership and the Miami Museum of
Science.
Families will receive free admission into the Museum
to come and see the program participants work on
display performances by program participants and an
ensemble performance arranged by Arts for
Learning. Participants will be presented with
certificates of program completion and special
awards for recognition in achievement in selected
Areas.
4.h Amigos for Kids will host family involvement
activities and parent workshops at Jose Marti Park.
Typical family events include: Health Screening Fairs
for children and parents, Back to School Preparation
Fair, Parenting Workshops- eg. How to navigate the
school system to help your child succeed, Discipline
and Positive Reinforcement.
