HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-09-0060Vop City of Miami F .. 19611F A111 *'Ir Legislation i 0 R �O Resolution: R-09-0060 File Number: 09-00096 City Hall 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, FL 33133 www.miamigov.com Final Action Date: 2/12/2009 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION DECLARING THE SECOND THURSDAY OF EACH FEBRUARY AS "ANIMAL CARE, RESCUE AND ADOPTION AWARENESS DAY" IN THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA. WHEREAS, animals as pets enrich lives each day, but depend on human caretakers for their well being; and WHEREAS, close to four million dogs and cats are euthanized in animal shelters each year and countless others suffer homelessness on the streets or abuse in a home; and WHEREAS, many local pet rescue organizations are reporting an increase in abandoned puppies, kittens and adult dogs and cats because of the downturn in the economy; and WHEREAS, the pet population can be safely controlled by access to low-cost spay and neuter programs; and WHEREAS, organizations such as the Humane Society of Greater Miami ("Humane Society") provide low-cost pet care, neutering and adoption services, including a mobile animal medical clinic taken to low income Miami neighborhoods; and WHEREAS, the citizens of Miami benefit from Miami -Dade County Animal Services' ("Animal Services") licensing, adoption, animal cruelty enforcement and other programs; and WHEREAS, Animal Services and the Humane Society both have major outreach events in the month of February that focus much-needed attention on Animal Care, Rescue and Adoption; and WHEREAS, the Miami City Commission wishes to raise awareness of the many non-profit organizations that volunteer services to protect pets; and NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The second Thursday of each February is declared as "Animal Care, Rescue and Adoption Awareness Day" in the City of Miami, Florida. Section 2. The Miami City Commission meeting held on the second Thursday of each February, will commence with a brief observance of "Animal Care, Rescue and Adoption Awareness Day." Section 3. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become effective immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission.
