Funding is being requested for the continuation of this program which rewards youth for being leaders in the community, not using drugs, portraying a positive image and excelling in education. Another benefit of this program is that it allows children, living in high -crime areas, to interact with uniformed police officers in non -confrontational settings, thereby establishing positive associations and enhancing mutual respect. The program directly impacts approximately 6,000 children annually through its awards program and hundreds more through community events, activities and projects. The "Do The Right Thing" program has grown, since its inception, by attracting various influential sponsors. The major sponsors are: The Miami Herald, British Airways, WTVJ-NBC 6, Publix Super Markets Charities, Ronald McDonald House Charities, Bank Atlantic Foundation, Florida Marlins, Florida Allstate Foundation and United Automobile Insurance Group, all having been instrumental in the advertising and promotion of the program.
