A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION CO -DESIGNATING
NORTHWEST 45 AVENUE BETWEEN NORTHWEST 3 STREET AND NORTHWEST
7 STREET, MIAMI, FLORIDA, AS "ANTONIO D. ESQUIVEL WAY," PURSUANT TO
SECTION 54-137 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA, AS AMENDED;
FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS
RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN DESIGNATED OFFICIALS.
WHEREAS, Antonio D. Esquivel ("Mr. Esquivel"), born in Havana, Cuba on October 9,
1936, fought for a democratic Cuba from Miami, Florida ("City"), from the start of the rise of the
communist regime in Cuba until his passing; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Esquivel, a social and political activist whose educational, professional
and activism assisted many pioneers in the transportation industry in South Florida, as well as
assisted many people escaping communism; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Esquivel, believed fighting against communist regimes was critical to
defending democracy and did so by helping found the Venezuelan American Brotherhood, as
well as help found a shelter for former Cuban political prisoners in Venezuela; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Esquivel was the organizer and coordinator of the two (2) joint exile
marches for the Venezuelan brothers in 2002 and 2003 in Miami; and
WHEREAS, the City of Miami Commission wishes to honor the significant historical
contribution and community benefit that Mr. Antonio D. Esquivel made to the City and
community by co designating Northwest 45 Avenue between Northwest 3 Street and Northwest
7 Street, Miami, Florida, as "Antonio D. Esquivel Way";
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are
adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section.
Section 2. The City Commission hereby co -designates Northwest 45 Avenue between
Northwest 3 Street and Northwest 7 Street, Miami, Florida, as "Antonio D. Esquivel Way."
Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to the
Departments of Police, Fire -Rescue, Solid Waste, the Miami -Dade County Department of
Transportation and Public Works, the United States Postal Service, and, if a State of Florida
road, to the Florida Department of Transportation, District Six, for sign installation within the
newly designated roadways.
Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption.
