In response to a letter written to the Mayor by Mr. Leo Albert,
President of the Adelphian Club, requesting the official naming
of the proposed Central Miami Park after Mr. Henry E. S. Reeves,
the following is a recount of that request.
On March 9, 1978 the City's Memorial Committee recommended that
the park be named in honor of Mr. Reeves. On April 3, 1978 my
staff, at the request of Mr. Homan, conducted a survey of the
Culmer community soliciting their support or opposition for the
renaming of the Central Miami Park for Mr. Henry E. S. Reeves.
In the sampling we surveyed a total of 703 households in the
Culmer area. Of those surveyed, 611 households were in favor
and 92 were in opposition. We feel that this is overwhelming
community support, and we also recommend that the Central Miami
Park, which is now completed, be renamed for Mr. Henry E. S.
Reeves.

Members of the Miami City Commission
Miami, Florida
Gentlemen:
The members of the Adelphian Club, which has operated
continuously in Miami for more than 50 years, would like to re-
quest that the City of Miami officially name the proposed Cen-
tral Miami Park at NW 10th Street and 5th Avenue after one of
the founding members of this club and an outstanding civic and
community worker during the 51 years he lived here.
Mr. Reeves moved to Miami in 1919 and established The
Magic Printing Company at 528 Avenue G (now Second Avenue). He
organized The Miami Times newspaper in 1923, which is now the
oldest black business in Dade County.
Mr. Reeves was an active and dedicated civic worker
during his entire lifetime in Miami. He received numerous
awards and citations for his untiring services to this city.
Mr. Reeves died on December 10, 1970. His son, Garth,
and daughters, Hazel R. Grant and Frances R. Chambers, as well
as scores of other relatives still live here in Dade County.
The Adelphian Club feels that officially naming the
Central Miami Park the "HENRY E. S. REEVES PARK" will be a
worthy tribute to one of Miami's outstanding citizens.
Any consideration to this request will be greatly
appreciated.
Very truly yours,,
Leo Albert, President
